The “I’m Not a Romantic Person” Excuse Is Getting Old

We all know someone who says it. Maybe you’ve even caught yourself saying it. “I’m just not a romantic person.” The words slip out with a shrug, almost like a badge of honor. Somehow, this simple phrase has become a free pass for not showing up emotionally for the people who matter most.

But here’s the truth: romance and effort are not interchangeable. It’s time we stop letting one excuse hide the absence of the other.

What “I’m Not Romantic” Actually Means

When most people say they are not romantic they are not talking about things like having dinner by candlelight or planning a surprise trip for the weekend. They mean they do not think to do the things that show they care. They forget the anniversary of the day they met. They do not send cards to the people they love. They think that the people they love already know how they feel so they do not say it loud.

That is where things start to go wrong. People do not just want to be loved by the people they care about. They want to feel loved by them. There is a difference between being loved and feeling loved and it is important. To feel loved people need to see proof that they are loved. They need someone to do things for them sometimes like send a gift or write a note. They need to know that someone was thinking about them and did something about it not just because it is their birthday or a holiday. Just because they were on that person’s mind.

This is not about being romantic. It is about being there for the people you love and showing them that you care. Anyone can do this. The people you love just want to know that you are thinking about them and that you are willing to do things to show them that you love them. Love is not just a feeling, it is also about the things you do to show that you care. The people you love want to feel loved. They want to know that you are thinking about them.

“I’m Not Romantic” Is Not a Personality Type

Here’s what nobody really says out loud: being unromantic is often just being out of practice. It’s a habit, not a trait. People who are good at making others feel special are not wired differently. They have simply decided, repeatedly, to act on what they feel rather than assume the other person already knows.

The “I’m not romantic” label lets people off the hook too easily. It reframes a choice as a characteristic. It turns “I don’t prioritise this” into “I’m just built this way.” And the people on the receiving end of that excuse are left feeling like they’re asking for too much when really they’re just asking to feel seen.

Small Gestures Are Not Romantic. They’re Human.

There’s a version of romance that involves grand gestures, dramatic declarations, and movie-level moments. That version is optional. Most people don’t need it and aren’t asking for it.

What people really want is pretty simple. Sometimes it is nice to get a message on a day that says someone was thinking of them. It is nice when someone sends a birthday message that feels like they put some thought into it, not something they threw together in a few seconds. It is also nice when someone remembers something that you mentioned and they acknowledge it. These things are not about being romantic. They are about being a person. They show that you care about someone and you are willing to take the time to show it. These small things say that the person matters to you and you are willing to spend a couple of minutes to make that clear.

If that feels like too much effort, the issue is not that you’re unromantic. The issue is that showing up for people hasn’t become a priority yet.

The People Around You Are Not Asking for Much

Most people have quietly lowered their expectations so many times that they’ve stopped asking for the things they actually want. They’ve accepted the “I’m not a romantic person” explanation and adjusted themselves around it. They tell themselves it’s fine. They tell themselves they understand.

But understanding something and being okay with it are two different things.

The people in your life, your partner, your friends, your family do not want you to be perfect. What the people in your life want is to see that you care about them. They want proof that you think about them and the things that happen to them. The people in your life want proof that they matter to you. They want to know that being in your life means something. The people in your life want to feel like they’re important to you and that you value the time you spend with them, the people in your life.

You don’t need to be romantic to give them that. You just need to be intentional.

Start Somewhere Small

If you’ve been hiding behind the “I’m not romantic” excuse, this is a good moment to set it down. Not because grand gestures are suddenly required, but because the people around you deserve more than an excuse.

Send something today. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A card, a message, something that says: I was thinking about you and I wanted you to know. That’s it. That’s all it takes to start.
